LiFT: Tell us about your book, the journey of writing it, and its content.
Smita Shetty: Raising a #GirlBoss is a heartfelt and practical guide for parents, educators, and caregivers who want to nurture confident, independent, and emotionally strong girls in today’s fast-changing world. The journey of writing this book began from my own observations of how early conditioning, social expectations, and unconscious biases shape a girl’s mindset long before she understands her own potential.
The book blends real-life insights, relatable examples, and actionable parenting strategies to help raise girls who are not only ambitious but also empathetic, resilient, and self-aware. Rather than focusing solely on success or leadership, it emphasizes mindset, emotional intelligence, financial awareness, decision-making, and self-belief. Writing this book was both reflective and purposeful,it felt like contributing to a future where girls are raised to lead their lives on their own terms.
LiFT: Why did you choose this title?
Smita Shetty: It started with letters to my daughter which i wanted her to read while she grows up and then it eventually linked to my first book – #BossLady: Leap Rise & Shine. So this title meant apt.
LiFT: When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer, and what was your inspiration behind it?
Smita Shetty: have been writing since I was a child in the form of essays, poems, and drama scripts. Writing was always a natural way for me to express my thoughts and emotions, even before I consciously thought of it as a craft or a career.
However, it was during the COVID period that my relationship with writing deepened. I began blogging regularly, sharing my thoughts, experiences, and reflections with a wider audience. The response I received was overwhelming and deeply encouraging. People resonated with my words, reached out to share how my writing impacted them, and that connection made me realize the true power of storytelling.
That phase marked the beginning of my journey as an author. What started as personal expression evolved into a purpose to write in a way that connects, inspires, and creates meaningful conversations.
LiFT: Where do you see yourself ten years down the line in the world of literature?
Smita Shetty: Ten years from now, I see myself as a voice for growth and possibility ,someone whose writing continues to connect deeply with women across different stages of life. My aim is to reach more and more women through my words, encouraging them to believe in themselves, question limitations, and aspire for more confidence, more freedom, and more ownership of their dreams.
I hope my work evolves into a body of literature that not only inspires but also empowers women to grow emotionally, professionally, and personally. If my writing can make even a small difference in helping women see their worth and step into their potential, I would consider that a meaningful and lasting contribution to the literary world.
LiFT: How important do you think marketing and the quality of a book are in promoting it and increasing its readership?
Smita Shetty: Both quality and marketing play equally important roles in a book’s success. Quality is what makes readers stay, connect, and recommend the book to others it builds trust and longevity. Marketing, on the other hand, ensures that the book reaches the right audience in the first place. Even the best-written book needs visibility to find its readers.
I believe marketing may attract readers initially, but it is the quality of content that creates impact, word-of-mouth, and lasting readership. When both come together authentically, a book has the power to truly grow.
LiFT: What message do you want to convey to people through your writing?
Smita Shetty: Through my writing, I want to convey a message of growth, self-belief, and possibility. I want people especially women to recognize their worth, question limitations placed on them, and feel empowered to aspire for more in life.
My aim is to inspire readers to grow emotionally, think independently, and embrace their strengths with confidence and compassion. If my words can make someone pause, reflect, or take a step toward becoming a better version of themselves, then my writing has served its purpose.
LiFT: What do you do apart from writing?
Smita Shetty: Apart from writing, I work full-time as the Regional Marketing & Communications Director for the Asia Pacific region. Balancing a demanding professional role with creativity has shaped my perspective and discipline as a writer.
I am also a mother to a six-year-old daughter, which is one of my most meaningful roles and a constant source of inspiration. In addition, I enjoy performing on stage occasionally, as it allows me to express myself creatively in a different form. Each of these roles adds depth to my experiences and influences the way I observe, think, and write.
LiFT: What activities do you resort to when you face writer’s block?
Smita Shetty: When I face writer’s block, I step away from writing and allow myself space to reset. I read, reflect, go for a walk, or simply observe life around me. Sometimes, revisiting old journals or engaging in conversations sparks fresh thoughts.
I believe inspiration flows best when the mind is relaxed, not forced. Giving myself permission to pause often helps clarity return naturally.
LiFT: What if your story were to be adapted into a movie? Who would you want to work as the director or actors in it?
Smita Shetty: Raising a #GirlBoss is deeply personal and reflective, so if it were ever adapted visually, I would prefer it to be handled by a woman director who values emotional depth, authenticity, and subtle storytelling rather than spectacle. The focus would need to be on real moments, quiet strength, and relationships that shape a woman’s journey.
I would want actors who can portray strength with sensitivity performers who can convey resilience, vulnerability, and growth in a nuanced way rather than through dramatic excess like Priyanka Chopra or Sushmita sen
LiFT: Are you working on your next book? If so, could you tell us something about it?
Smita Shetty: Not yet. There are several thoughts running on my mind but that is for 2027.
LiFT: What are your suggestions for budding writers and poets to help them improve their writing skills?
Smita Shetty: My biggest suggestion is to write consistently, even when it feels imperfect. Writing improves through practice, honesty, and observation. Read widely, but write authentically, your voice matters more than perfection.
Don’t wait for confidence to start; confidence grows through doing. Share your work, accept feedback with an open mind, and stay curious about people, emotions, and life. Most importantly, write with intention and heart because meaningful writing always comes from truth.
