LiFT: Tell us about your book, the journey of writing it and its content?
Harshitha Tallam: When I started writing this book, I was excited but also a bit nervous. As someone who likes things to be just right, I had high hopes for my first novel. But as I worked on it, I realized that first drafts are rarely perfect – they’re just the starting point for something bigger.
So, I tried to focus on making it the best I could, rather than perfect. And let me tell you, it wasn’t always easy! Some days I was tired from work, others I had exams to study for, but I kept going. And now that it’s done, I’m really proud of myself for pushing through.
I’m grateful for the experience of writing this book – it’s taught me a lot about perseverance and creativity.
One thing you’ll notice is that I’ve woven in some elements of ABAP, a programming language I work with as an ABAP developer. It’s a part of my profession, and I thought it would be a fun way to add some authenticity to the story. Feel free to read about it, or skip over it and focus on the story itself – either way, I hope you’ll enjoy the ride!”
LiFT: Why you chose this title?
Harshitha Tallam: I choose ‘An Office Love Story’ as the subtitle because it reflects where the hero and heroine meet. As for ‘My Index Zero’, you’ll have to read the book to know the story behind it.
LiFT: When did you realize that you want to be a writer and what’s your inspiration behind it?
Harshitha Tallam: My passion for writing began when I was in primary school, around 3rd or 4th grade. I would write short stories, just a page long, and from then on, I knew that I wanted writing to be a part of my life’s journey.
LiFT: Where do you see yourself ten years down the line in the world of literature?
Harshitha Tallam: In 10 years, I’d love to see my books on shelves in all the bookstores across the world and online, and most importantly, people enjoying and connecting with my stories. And I hope those stories will transport them to their own dream world, getting lost in the pages of my book.”
LiFT: How much do you think marketing or quality of a book is necessary to promote a particular book and increase its readers?
Harshitha Tallam: Quality (60-70%) and marketing (30-40%) are both crucial for a book’s success. A well-written story, good writing, and relatable characters are essential. Marketing helps increase visibility, targets the right audience, and builds credibility. A balanced approach to both quality and marketing is key. I am still learning to do things right as I am still in the initial stages.
LiFT: What is the message you want to spread among folks with your writings?
Harshitha Tallam: As an author, I write to give readers a break from their busy lives, offering a glimpse into a world where love sparks in the most unexpected places. In my office love story, I want to take you to a place where the daily grind of work is mixed with moments of excitement, connection, and the thrill of discovering love right in the middle of it all.
LiFT: What do you do apart from writing?
Harshitha Tallam: Apart from writing, I am an ABAP developer working in Bangalore.
LiFT: What are the activities you resort to when you face a writer’s block?
Harshitha Tallam: When I hit writer’s block, I sleep for the day and continue the next day with a fresh mind. Sometimes, I read books for inspiration or take a break, and a change of scenery helps as well. These little shifts often bring new ideas and help me get back on track.
LiFT: What if your story will be adopted as a movie? Whom would you want to work as a director or actors in it?
Harshitha Tallam: I would love to work with Rajamouli sir, especially since he’s known for directing epic historical fictional films like Baahubali. I’d also love to see him direct a slice-of-life film, like my story, and I believe he would excel at it. He’s someone I truly look up to.
LiFT: Are you working on your next book? If yes, please tell us something about it.
Harshitha Tallam: I haven’t started working on my next book yet, but I plan to write a mini book series. I’d love to work with the same editor, Falguni, as she’s excellent at her work and always so helpful. I’m truly grateful for her support.
LiFT: What are your suggestions to the budding writers/poets so that they could improve their writing skills?
Harshitha Tallam: I believe the key to improving writing skills lies in consistent practice and reading widely. Embrace different genres, styles, and voices to expand your vocabulary and understanding of structure. Don’t shy away from feedback, as constructive criticism is invaluable for growth. But don’t take it to heart so it doesn’t demotive you. Lastly, write with honesty and authenticity, allowing your unique voice to shine through. Writing is a journey, and every word you write brings you closer to mastering your craft.
