LiFT: Tell us about your book, the journey of writing it and its content?

Sushant Rajput: The book delves into the essential professional skills required to thrive in the corporate world, beyond what traditional education often overlooks. It offers practical insights, actionable advice, and real-life examples to equip readers with the tools they need to succeed in their careers.

The idea of writing this book originated after a couple of years of finishing my MBA, where i envisaged if there was a guide book which could help me in being better prepared for the corporate world, a book that should cover the essential skills required to survive and grow in the industry, The process of bringing this book to life began with brainstorming and outlining the main concepts I wanted to cover. Once I had a clear structure, I started writing the first draft, focusing on getting all my ideas down without worrying too much about perfection.

After completing the draft, I went through several rounds of revisions, refining the content, and ensuring clarity. Feedback from peers from industry, academicians and editors were incorporated to make it a worthy read.

LiFT: Why you chose this title?

Sushant Rajput: The genesis of the title ‘I Wish Someone Told Me This Before My First Job – Skills to Scale’, stemmed from my astute observation of the gaping chasm between theoretical knowledge and practical skills requisite for success in the corporate arena. This drove a desire to empower students and young professionals to navigate through the complexities of the professional world with confidence and competence, i embarked to distill my wealth of expertise into a comprehensive guidebook for career advancement.

LiFT: When did you realize that you want to be a writer and what’s your inspiration behind it?

Sushant Rajput: The inspiration for writing my first and latest book, “I Wish Someone Told Me This Before My First Job,” came from my experiences in the corporate world and academia. I realized there was a significant gap in practical knowledge for students entering the workforce.

Generally, I find inspiration in my professional experiences, interactions with students, and observing industry trends.

LiFT: Where do you see yourself ten years down the line in the world of literature?

Sushant Rajput: My long-term goal is to create a comprehensive series of books that cover various aspects of professional and personal development. I also aspire to write a memoir that chronicles my journey, and the lessons learned along the way.

LiFT: How much do you think marketing or quality of a book is necessary to promote a particular book and increase its readers?

Sushant Rajput: Marketing and social media are incredibly important for an author. They provide platforms to reach a wider audience, engage with readers, and build a personal brand. Effective use of these tools can significantly impact a book’s success.

Instagram and the bookstagram community goes a long way in promoting a book. No matter how well you’ve written, it will only reach the audience when you market it right.

I loved how Amish Tripathi found various creative ways to market his book. For new authors, I would suggest you check out Saksham Garg’s marketing tactics. It is extremely consistent and he makes the best use of reels format.

LiFT: What is the message you want to spread among folks with your writings?

Sushant Rajput: I hope my books equip readers with practical skills, boost their confidence, and inspire them to navigate their professional journeys more effectively.

I aim to provide guidance that can lead to tangible improvements in their careers and personal growth.

LiFT: What do you do apart from writing?

Sushant Rajput: When I’m not writing, I enjoy reading, traveling, and exploring new technologies. These activities help me unwind and often spark new ideas.

LiFT: What are the activities you resort to when you face a writer’s block?

Sushant Rajput: When I face writer’s block, I take a step back and engage in activities that relax my mind, such as taking a walk or reading a book. Sometimes, discussing ideas with colleagues or friends helps spark new thoughts. I also find that setting smaller, achievable writing goals can help overcome the initial hurdle.

LiFT: Are you working on your next book? If yes, please tell us something about it.

Sushant Rajput: Yes, i’m currently working on my next book. The book will solely focus on time management, overthinking, and procrastination. The only other thing i want to say is ‘Stay tuned’, as the next one too will be much more interesting and include a plethora of practical guides.

LiFT: What are your suggestions to the budding writers/poets so that they could improve their writing skills?

Sushant Rajput: Aspiring authors should focus on honing their craft, seeking constructive feedback, and being persistent. Networking within the industry and researching potential publishers or self-publishing platforms is also crucial.

Most importantly, believe in your work and stay dedicated to your writing. Marketing is indeed important, but in this race, craft is much much more important. Focus on that, everything else will follow.
