LiFT: Tell us about your book, the journey of writing it, and its content.

Manoj Sahni: “I often end up buying toys from the market, thinking I will carry childhood back with me in a bag…”

Manoj Sahni is a writer of Karuna Rasa (the sentiment of compassion and pathos) who, apart from Hindi poetry, also has an interest in story writing and screenplay writing. He was born in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, where he also completed his entire education. After completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Commerce from Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, he also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the same university. After passing his 12th-grade examination in 2008, he continued his higher studies and, during his free time, began teaching children. Teaching students from different backgrounds and interacting closely with them gave him the opportunity to understand various aspects of life in depth. Drawing from these experiences, he has woven the deeply touching emotions of human life into his poetry. Because of his informal involvement in the field of teaching, some of his poems also reflect enthusiasm and motivation. This is his first poetry collection, which keeps readers emotionally engaged and immersed in imagination.

LiFT: Why did you choose this title?

Manoj Sahni: Because this title is the basis for bringing a person out of the difficulties of emotions and mind and connecting with God while living in the family.

LiFT: When did you realize that you wanted to be a writer, and what was your inspiration behind it?

Manoj Sahni: I’ve been writing poetry since the eighth grade, but during my college days, teaching children from different classes sparked a sense of compassion and enthusiasm within me. These inspirations inspired me to become a writer.

LiFT: Where do you see yourself ten years down the line in the world of literature?

Manoj Sahni: My ideal poet in Hindi poetry is the great poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar and among Hindi prose writers, my ideal is Munshi Premchand, hence I want to achieve success by following in their footsteps.

LiFT: How important do you think marketing and the quality of a book are in promoting it and increasing its readership?

Manoj Sahni: Just as a person’s appearance and behavior reflect their personality, similarly the quality and marketing of a book reflect its authorship.

LiFT: What message do you want to convey to people through your writing?

Manoj Sahni: Despite the artificial nature of human lifestyle today, the place that relationships and old memories hold in his mind is more valuable to him than all other comforts and luxuries.

LiFT: What do you do apart from writing?

Manoj Sahni: I work in the accounting section of the Uttarakhand Municipality Office and also teach commerce students. Besides writing, I also have an interest in teaching.

LiFT: What activities do you resort to when you face writer’s block?

Manoj Sahni: I try to expand my imagination by reading the great works of the past.

LiFT: Are you working on your next book? If so, could you tell us something about it?

Manoj Sahni: Yes, I am writing a heroic Hindi poem which is related to the history of Uttarakhand.

LiFT: What are your suggestions for budding writers and poets to help them improve their writing skills?

Manoj Sahni: To become a good writer, it is important to read as much as possible the works of great writers of the past and try to understand their sentiments.
